A Stroll Down Memory Lane August 1994
The first Installation of Officers and Choir of Bethel UD of Clinton, Maryland, was held on January 16, 1954 at the Surrattsville School. The first Guardian was Mrs. Ruth Lartz and the first Associate Guardian was Mr. Paul Snyder. There were 26 girls in the Bethel and the first Honored Queen to be installed was Miss Betty Lou Snyder. Acting as Installing Senior Custodian in that special occasion was Miss Annetta Stumpf, PHQ of Bethel No. 16. That girl is now Mrs. Annetta Stumpf, Past Grand Guardian of Maryland and Past Supreme Guardian of the International Order of Job's Daughters. On Monday, May 3, 1954, after months of work, practice, meetings, money-raising projects, and help from many dedicated people (especially Mrs. Estle Job and the members of Bethel No. 12), the girls were ready to receive their Charter. The minutes read as follows: "Our Bethel was very fortunate to have out Constitution Ceremony. Mother Baden said we were born in a snow Storm and constituted in a good rain. All the Officers and Council Members were led to the Altar to receive our Charter. We are no longer Bethel UD, we are Bethel No. 41 of Clinton, Maryland." Now, forty years later, the words of that unknown Recorder still ring with pride and accomplishment. Even though the pendulum has swung back and forth insofar as membership over the years, Bethel No. 41 continues to strive for success and growth. An all-time low in membership occurred in the late 1980's -- now, in the 1990's, we are growing once again! A sidelight should now be inserted in the abbreviated history: The Mother Baden that presented our Charter, was Mrs. Marian Baden, Grand Guardian in 1953-1954, and Past Guardian of Bethel No. 12. She was also the great-grandmother of Cheryl Pine, who later became a Member of Bethel No. 41. Betty Lou Synder, the first Honored Queen, went on to become Grand Bethel Honored Queen and Guardian of Bethel No. 41. The first years for Bethel No. 41 were filled with bake sales, spaghetti dinners, a Gay nineties Show, a trip to New York, Easter Monday Banquets, roller skating, meetings, initiations, and much growth. The girls were becoming proficient in their ritualistic work and learning exactly how to run a Bethel in a responsible manner. They held silver teas, dances, sold Easter eggs, and several Past Honored Queen's were active as Grand Bethel Officers. On September 23, 1957, a mascot was acquired and Past Honored Queen Nelda Webster won a prize for naming the stuffed monkey "Jobie Dee 41". Not only was Bethel No. 41 growing, so was Camp Springs Lodge No. 227. In October of 1958, the Bethel Daughters started selling bricks at .25 and .50 to help build a Temple. Meanwhile, the meeting place had moved to Bell's Methodist Church in the old Sunday School Building. One certain Past Honored Queen remembers very clearly waiting in a damp basement with overhead pipes and cinderblock walls, a carrot in one hand and a can in the other, to be escorted above to ride the donkey. Much relieved, she found only a very small room, slanted wooden floors and three of the most beautiful girls she had seen, sitting in the East like fairy tale princesses, complete with capes and crowns. On December 5, 1960, the Bethel took another step forward and moved into our present Temple for the last meeting of Honored Queen Julie Butz's term. On December 19th, Ina Jean Revis, Honored Queen, and a new Corps of Officers took over and made this our permanent home. In November 1961, the girls under the captainship of Honored Queen Susan Butz, formed the first Drill Team of Bethel No. 41. After many false starts, black pleated skirts and white button down shirts and lots of left feet, this group developed into a very competitive team. Over the years, the Drill Teams have come home with awards and first place trophies from both Grand and Supreme Competitions. This goal, the girls in 1961 never dreamed of accomplishing. In 1962, Bethel No. 41 adopted a French boy, Jean-Pierre Pouchenot, and pledged $120.00 per year toward his care. Correspondence and additional monetary gifts continued for some time. Charity was an important part of the Job's Daughters training. One Christmas Eve, the Daughters took gifts to a family with four children who were experiencing financial difficulties. The mother, who as the lone support, was so happy she cried. These Daughters found the true meaning of giving. Members of No. 41, along with Members of the Camp Springs DeMolay Chapter, went to the School of Hope to assist in therapy of crippled children. This, too, was a most rewarding experience. Our location was changed from Clinton to Camp Springs during this time since our meeting place was now the Camp Springs Lodge. The history of the 1960's and 70's is full of fun times, sad occasions, many trials and errors, good friendships that would hopefully last a lifetime, and very rapid growth. At one point in the mid 60's, there were 25-30 members regularly in the Choir. We became known as excellent ritualists and a friendly group of girls. We were also devils who short-sheeted beds, peanut buttered out-stretched fingers, and told ghost stories late at night in mountain cabins. We could also sound like angels as we sang "Jacob's Ladder" while travelling from Grand Installations in Ocean City. This song came to be the standard of Bethel No. 41. Just like rungs in a ladder, we must hold together if we are to climb higher. Unity and sisterhood, working and playing, each helping another, Bethel No. 41 would reap even greater reward and success. Thus we come to this reunion at the Camp Springs Masonic Temple, which remains the meeting place of Bethel No. 41. The luncheon is being put on by the Members and Council of our Bethel. These Daughters continue the tradition of serving breakfasts and dinners and are very proficient in their tasks. Our Bethel has been adopted by St. John's Lodge No. 11 of Washington, D.C. and the Council and Daughters prepare and serve dinners and refreshments at their special meetings. Bethel No. 41 has always been blessed with good, hard-working Councils, and the one today is no exception. Several Council Members are Majority Members of Job's Daughters who now have their own daughters in Bethel No. 41. And, so, the tradition continues! It is hard to believe that more than 50 years have passed since this Bethel was chartered but it has had much success and been the recipients of much love. Let us pray it will continue for many, many years to come! Compiled and prepared by Mom Waller with much love and respect to all our beautiful Daughters, "The Fairest In All The Land" |
